Sharplaninac - The Breed

The Sarplaninac, pronounced "shar-pla-nee-natz", originates from Kosovo and Macedonia.  Dogs were bred and worked mainly in the mountains of Shar Planina, for which they are named after, for many years until finally being exported to other countries.

The Sharplaninac is a large, strong built, well proportioned dog with plenty of bone.  They have long, thick coats, generally 4 inches or longer.  They have a full top coat with an abundant undercoat making them essentially "waterproof" and ideal for outdoor living conditions.  They come in many colours including iron grey, fawn, white and almost black, they may also be grey or sable with darker colours on the head and back.

The Sharplaninac is a true working dog and is generally unhappy in environments that provide little for them to do.  They are a serious and dedicated guard dog, independent, reliable and protective.  They are highly respectful, incorruptible and devoted to their masters.  Typically used as protectors of sheep flocks, the Shaplaninac is quite capable of working with any group of livestock from chickens to cattle.  In a family environment, the Sharplaninac will commonly treat family members as their "flock" and herd them away from anything they perceive as dangerous.  Sharplaninac are considerate and gentle towards children and small animals.  They are capable off warding of many predictors including wolves, bears and lynx.  Sharplaninac possess a wariness of strangers and natural dog aggression, socialization is of the utmost importance as pups.
