Kunekune Pigs - The Breed

The Kunekune pig is a rare, heritage breed that is relatively new to Canada.  Kunekunes were initially bred by the Maori people of New Zealand.  These little pigs were a staple in their diet.  In many cases the pigs roamed free around the Maori lands foraging for food.

Kunekunes are a small breed of pig averaging around 150-300 pounds, much smaller than traditional meat pigs which can weigh in excess of 600 pounds.  They are stout and round and typically have wattles (piri piri which hang from their chins).  They come in a variety of colours and their coats tend to have medium length coarse hair.  They are adaptable to many climates.

Kunekunes are a very docile and friendly breed of pig.  They enjoy human company immensely and are very intelligent and trainable.  They are easy to keep and care for.  As they are traditionally a foraging animal they can be raised on pasture with very little supplementation at all.  They are ideal for small and urban farms as they can be sustained on small plots of land.

The pork produced from Kunekunes is highly favorable and desired by chefs around the world.  The meat is ideal for roasting and charcuterie.  The fat from a Kunekune pig produces a pure, clean lard ideal for baking.

Kunekune sows possess strong mothering instinct.  Kunekune boars tend to be docile and respectful.
