Ivanleigh Sheep

We are now concentrating on purebred White Dorper sheep and crosses of White Dorper with our current Rideau Arcott and Dorset ewes.  After researching many breeds, we chose the White Dorper as they possess many of the desirable characteristics we were looking for.

White Dorpers originated in South Africa in the 1930's by crossing a Dorset Horn with a Blackhead Persian sheep.  The drive behind this crossing was to produce a fast growing, meat producing animal that would thrive under the harsh conditions and limited feed sources in the African landscape.  As a result of this crossing both Black Dorpers and White Dorpers were produced.  Both types carry the same qualities with the only difference being the colour of their heads. From this point onward I will refer to the breed as "Dorper" as both exhibit the following characteristics.

Dorpers can adapt to a variety of feeding conditions easily and thrive in a grass fed environment alone.  This eliminates the need to supplement with grains and enables the production of a 100% pasture grazed animal.  Dorpers produce a light wool/hair coat which sheds itself in the spring and summer months which eliminates the need for shearing.  Dorper ewes have great mothering instincts and are known to lamb out of season with the possibility of lambing 3 times in 2 years.  Dorpers can often have twins and will easily raise them independently.

Meat is light and flavourful, containing just the right amount of fat to retain tenderness and moisture when cooked.  Dorper lambs are fast growers and average an 80 pound live weight by 100 days.  It is becoming increasingly common to see Dorper lambs selling for the highest price at many sales markets and venues.

We sell both breeding stock and meat, please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.
